Today's Hair: Curly Fro

So I'm pretty excited at the unexpected results of today's hair. Yesterday's Sunday Question brought up a small discussion on ideas we have for our Fall hairstyles and I mentioned I wanted to still rock fluffy hair and high buns like I was during the summer - except I won't be walking out the house with wet hair and it will definitely be stretched out.

Yesterday I washed with Yes to Cucumbers and deep conditioned using a new product I'm experimenting with, La Plancha Deep Conditioning Treatment (I'll give a full review later this week). Next I used Lacio Lacio as my leave-in and a little John Frieda Ease Straight Fixation Smooth Creme (both of which I've used earlier this summer) and set my hair on flexi-rods. After a few hours of air-drying I took my hair down (even thought it was still a little damp) and put my hair into four big twists and tucked them in with bobby-pins to sleep in. This morning I took down the twists and I had a curly fro!

It's very windy today so I pulled my hair back very loosely, but I really wanted to wear my hair to work just like the first picture, as messy as it looks. I'm sure you can get the same results doing a bantu-knot out too. I'm still feeling really good about this look and will definitely be adding this to my "fall hair." What do you guys think?

Sunday Question: Your Fall Hairstyles

As evident by SP's Fall/Winter Hair Looks Post, we're already thinking about how we will look our greatest for Fall/Winter 2012. Last Fall for me, I was all about twisted styles but I think this time around I plan to wear my hair loose; either big fluffy braid outs or high buns. I'll probably find different ways to pin my hair using accessories. I've decided to have some more fun with my hair and try and get creative with these loose styles. A new color might be upon us (LOL) but not before I get my hair back in shape. I've been doing plenty of search and destroys to rid the single-strand-knots that are inevitable with too many wash-and-gos.

How will you wear your hair for Fall 2012? What new styles will you try?

In The City: Desert at Coolhaus!

A few weeks ago I was having a "triple couple's brunch" in Brooklyn. After laughing it up and enjoying some food, mimosas and the company it was decided we needed desert, but it had to be something with ice-cream. My friend suggested Coolhaus, a truck stationed in various parts of the city where they put a hunk of ice-cream between two cookies. This isn't your average ice-cream sandwich you get in the frozen food aisle in the supermarkets. First off you choose the ice-cream flavor you want (depending on what's on the menu for the truck that day), and then you choose your scrumptious cookie. They even have vegan and gluten free choices!
Nomnom
For my treat, I chose a s'mores cookie with Tahitian Vanilla ice-cream. And did I mention that the paper they wrap your cookie in is edible? No ice-cream dripping on a messy paper napkin. I've already gotten two of my co-workers addicted. We checked the schedule and realize they will be in Union Square on Monday so we're treating ourselves!

Their trucks are located at various parts of the cities they serve which looks like New York, Miami, Dallas, and L.A. Follow them on twitter for news of their locations!

Have any of you tried Coolhaus?

Natural Hair Memories: Baby Hair

I just finished reading this article on Clutch Mag about the whole "Baby Hair Obsession" pop-culture had in the 90s, with stars like Chili who rocked it frequently. For those of you who don't know when we (mostly black woman I imagine) say "baby hair" we're talking about the waves you may have (or create) at your hairline. I have no idea where this term came from, but I have a hunch as to why we want it - to look "mixed," which is an indicator of having "good hair," which is hair that should have the least amount of kinks/coils as possible. It's ridiculous and I say this as a person who has "baby hair."

As a kid my hairline was never brushed down - on day one of neatly done braids the hairs along my hairline and the back of my head was straight without coaxing, and then by days two and three it was frizzy because no one cared about keeping my baby hair in check. It wasn't until I got to junior high school when I started noticing girls in the bathroom using gel or Vaseline and a comb to smooth down what they called "baby hair." Suddenly I noticed that I had it too, and my friend insisted I start taming my hairline to show off how "good" my hair was. Wanting to fit in, I started  slicking my hair down with water. I didn't have any gel in my house and Vaseline didn't seem to work that great, so my hairline still frizzed up. I gave up on looking "mixed" and as an adult, while I'm amused by my "baby hair" I can't say I work towards keeping it sleek. Day one and two it's always wavy/straight but by day three it's fuzzy and I'm over it. I don't care for the sleek look anyway as evident by my hairstyle choices (read: big and poofy).

How do you guys feel about baby hair? Do you know where the terms comes from? Let us know!

Hair Growth Crash Course

I've been dying to post some hair science for quite a while but I knew it would take me forever to type it out! The other day, while browsing through Youtube I came across a video that breaks it all down. I really love the way she explains everything and speaks very clearly, and is quite accurate. There was only one statement I didn't agree with (The hair not growing past shoulder length part), but otherwise, this corsetted lady knows her stuff! Plus with hair to her knees... I'd definitely listen for a minute.

2 Quick and Easy Twist Out Styles for TWA's + Longer

Alright folks, my final and favorite video I made for this week! lol I know I've been loading them on this week, but I hope you all enjoy them and find them helpful. For all of my TWA ladies, I used my pinned-down method which is really great with helping us fake it until we make it in the length department! I also realize, especially with the fall coming that both of these hair styles are really great protective styles.
I'd really love for someone to speak up one of these days and give me a really cool hairstyle idea to make a video on... until then... Love, PEACE, and skip the grease! lol

High Bun on Blown Out Natural SL Hair

Hey All, I know this video is of a very simple bun, but I wanted to show you all how how to get a cute messy donut bun... minus the donut! My hair is only about shoulder length when blown out so this would work for anybody I imagine, who is at least shoulder length or longer.
Enjoy and stay tuned for one more video from me to come this week!
